Flora Graeca is one of those scarves collected as much for what it tells as for what it shows. It is signed by Niki Goulandris—a Greek botanical painter and illustrator, known for her scientific illustration work on plants, and co-founder, with her husband, of the Goulandris Museum of Natural History in Athens. Hermès commissioned this design, first published in 1983: a herbarium of ancient Greek flowers, presented by the house as the notebook of walks such as those taken by Homer and Pindar, from Crete to Mount Olympus.
The design carries all that rigor. The flowers are treated like herbarium plates—degraded petals, detailed stamens, veins drawn one by one—and each species is named in Latin within banner-like cartouches that run through the composition: Paeonia mascula, Helleborus niger, Fritillaria graeca, Campanula incurva. It is a scholarly scarf, but one that is far from austere: the scientific precision serves the beauty of the motif, never the other way around.
This version is offered in a particularly luminous yellow colorway: a cream background against which stand out powder pinks, mauves, corals, and ochres, supported by olive green and khaki foliage, the whole framed by a wide mustard border emphasized by an olive fillet. A warm and sunny palette, easy to wear with white, camel, khaki, or denim. The silk twill gives the scarf its sheen and drape, and the edges are hand-rolled—that rolled and then needle-stitched finish that creates the small peripheral ridge characteristic of the house's scarves.
